Micropollutants consist of wide-ranging and expanding classes of anthropogenic (man-made)  and naturally occurring unregulated substances, on the occurrence, behaviour, environmental fate and toxicity of which there are limited data.

Commonly known groups of micropollutants are pharmaceuticals, personal care products, stimulants, steroid hormones, surfactants, pesticides, herbicides, nanoparticles and many other emerging compounds, that might pose possible threats to the environment and humans.
